Gary Monheit, MD

Dr. Gary Monheit, MD is clinical professor in the department of Dermatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama. He is a fellow of The American Academy of Dermatology, The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, among others. He was President of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery 2001 and served on the board of directors. He is Past-President of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery and also served on its Board of Directors. He is a fellow of the American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and has served on its board of directors. Dr. Monheit is a senior editor for the Journal of Dermatologic Surgery, serves on the editorial board of Journal of Cosmetic Surgery and Cosmetic Dermatology, and is a regular contributor to the Dermatologic literature. He is board-certified by the American Board of Dermatology and the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. He was the Director of an ACGME fellowship program in Dermatologic Surgery and has 30 graduated fellows practicing in the United States and abroad. He lectures nationally and internationally and has contributed numerous journal articles and book chapters to medical literature. Dr. Monheit has done extensive clinical research into fillers, toxins and other cosmetic innovations. Dr. Monheit was awarded the 2014 Samuel J. Stegman, M.D. Award for distinguished service and contribution in teaching and new innovation at the Annual American Society for Dermatologic Surgery meeting in 2014. He also received the 2019 Instructor of the Year award from the University of Alabama at Birmingham for instruction to Dermatology residents. He was honored with the establishment of the Gary D. Monheit, MD Endowed Professorship Position in Cutaneous Oncology in the UAB Department of Dermatology in the Summer of 2020.
